慈愛經的由來—
佛陀有一次在衛舍利指導禪觀,眾多比丘接受佛陀個別指示禪觀對象後,去森林中坐在樹下修習。林中樹靈以為比丘只靜坐數日而不以為意,但得知他們要在三個月修滿後才離開,就¬用盡各種方法,日夜不停地干擾,來嚇走他們。比丘不堪其擾,回去稟報佛陀,希望另覓他處,好讓他們專心修禪。 佛陀教他們唱誦慈愛經,並吩咐他們沿路唱誦,回到原處,一方面用慈愛經保護自己,建立信心,一方面用慈愛經發揮愛心,迴向眾生,自利利他。 比丘依教奉行,到了森林時,整個僧團的四周瀰漫著慈愛吉祥的光輝,樹靈見了深受感動,立刻消除敵意,來臨擁護。比丘一心禪修,結夏期滿,都證得阿羅漢果。

Discourse On Loving-Kindness
Karaniya Metta Sutta (Sutra)
1.
Karaniyam attha kusalena
Yantam santam padam abhi samecca
Sakko uju ca suju ca
Suvaco cassa mudu anatimani
專於修善者,欲達安祥境,
應當有才能,正直且真誠,
柔順亦溫和,謙虛無驕慢。
One skilled in good, wishing to attain that state of peace should
act thus: one should be able, upright, perfectly upright, obedient,
gentle, and humble.
2.
Santussako ca subharo ca
Appakicco ca salla huka vutti
Santindriyo ca nipako ca
Appa gabbho kulesu ananu giddho
知足常安樂,易於受奉養,
事務不宜繁,生活當簡樸,
六根勤收斂,審慎熟思慮,
言行盡無漏,家親不貪戀。
One should be content, easily supported, with few duties, simple
livelihood, controlled in senses, discreet, not impudent, not be
greedily attached to families.
3.
Na ca khuddham samacare kinci
Yena vinnu pare upava deyyum
Sukhino va khemino hontu
Sabbe satta bhavantu sukhitatta
任何微細行,若為智慧者,
當有所譴責,皆應不犯過,
但願諸眾生,快樂且安穩,
願一切眾生,心中常喜樂。
One should not commit any slight wrong, for which other wise
persons might censure him. May all beings be happy and secure;
may all beings be happy-minded.
4.
Ye keci pana bhutatthi
Tasa va thavara va anavasesa
Digha va ye mahanta va
Majjhima rassa kanuka thula
無論何眾生,脆弱或堅強,
含攝皆無餘,長形或巨大,
中型或矮小,細微或粗厚。
Whatever beings there are, without exception, timid, strong, long
or huge, average, short or large.
5.
Dittha va ye va addittha
Ye ca dure vasanti avidure
Bhuta va sambhavesi va
Sabbe satta bhavantu sukhitatta
可見或難見,遠方或近處,
已生或將生,願一切眾生,
心中常喜樂。
Seen or unseen, dwelling far or near, born or to be born, may all
beings be happy-minded.
6.
Na paro param nikubbetha
Natimannetha katthaci nam kanci
Byarosana patigha sanna
Nanna mannassa dukkham iccheyya
無論在何方,彼此不欺瞞,
互不相藐視,勿存瞋恚心,
期使他人苦。
Let not one deceive another, nor despise any person whatsoever in
any place. In anger or ill-will, let him not wish any harm to another.
7.
Mata yatha niyam puttam
Ayusa ekaputtam anurakkhe
Evam pi sabba bhutesu
Manasam bhavaye aparimanam
猶如母對子,願以己生命,
保護彼獨子,如是對眾生,
修習勤發展,無限量慈心。
As a mother would risk her own life to protect her only child, even
so towards all beings, one should cultivate a heart of boundless
loving-kindness.
8.
Mettan ca sabba lokasmin
Manasam bhavaye aparimanam
Uddham adho ca tiriyan ca
Asambadham averam asapattam
慈心對眾生,發展無量心,
上下普四方,盡皆無障礙,
泯除憎恨心,亦無敵對意。
One should cultivate for all the world a heart of boundless
loving-kindness, above, below and across without any obstruction,
without any hatred, without any enmity.
9.
Tittham caram nisinno va
Sayano va yavatassa vigata middho
Etam satim adhittheyya
Brahmam etam viharam idhamahu
行住或坐臥,當處清醒際,
繫守此一念,謂之為梵住。
Standing, walking, sitting or lying down, whenever awake, one should
develop mindfulness as this is the highest abode.
10.
Ditthin ca anupagamma silava
Dassanena sampanno
Kamesu vineyya gedham
Nahi jatu gabbha seyyam punareti ti
不取諸惡見,圓滿戒與慧,
捨離欲貪念,終此不輪迴。
Views without error, but virtuous and endowed with vision, removing
desire for sensual pleasures, one never comes again to birth in the
womb
